What is this TiXL thing?

TiXL is an open-source software for creating real-time motion graphics. It aims for the sweet spot between real-time rendering, graph-based procedural content generation, and linear keyframe animation and editing. This unique combination enables artists to:

  • build audio-reactive VJ content
  • explore parameters through advanced interfaces
  • combine keyframe animation with automation

Rooted in the demoscene, TiXL is entirely non-commercial — developed by a friendly community of artists and developers.

Is this for me?

TiXL has been developed on Windows and is built around the DirectX graphics API. However, through wrappers it can also be installed on macOS and Linux.

If you're familiar with node-based tools like TouchDesigner or VVVV, the workflow will feel familiar. At the same time, TiXL supports timeline-based animation, making it suitable for more traditional keyframe workflows as well.

With features like preset blending, Shader Graphs, and a simple yet powerful particle system, you can quickly create striking visual scenes and connect them via, MIDI, OSC, NDI, or Spout.

For technical artists and developers, TiXL offers hot code reloading and custom shader integration for a flexible and efficient creative process.

What will I learn?

We will cover...

  • Setup and installation
  • Introduction to the user interface
  • Procedural animation
  • Keyframe animation
  • Image effects
  • 3D effects
  • Set up for VJ acts and connecting OSC, MIDI, etc.
  • Building an executable

For advanced users we will show ...

  • How to write compute and pixel shaders
  • How to write new Operators with C#
