Pauric Freeman: TouchDesigner + Ableton Live Workshop

In partnership with HOLON, Berlin New Media Week brings a full-day workshop with acclaimed media artist Pauric Freeman. Join Pauric and explore techniques for audiovisual composition using TouchDesigner and Ableton Live!

Participants will learn how to set up communication between the two programs using TDAbleton, and use data from Ableton to create an audiovisual composition in TouchDesigner. The session will focus on using sonic data to shape visual design, considering how musical gestures can influence form and motion.

Learning Outcomes

• Set up and configure TDAbleton to transfer data from Ableton to TouchDesigner
• Extract, structure, and manipulate musical data to drive realtime visual changes
• Design a generative audiovisual system where sound shapes visual composition

This is not a beginner workshop and participants should have a basic understanding of TouchDesigner, as fundamental concepts will not be covered. To ensure consistency, the workshop will use Ableton 12 and TouchDesigner version 2023.12370. Participants must have both programs installed prior to the workshop. Participants should also bring a 3-button mouse to the workshop, as we will need this for working in TouchDesigner.

About your instructor:

Pauric Freeman is an acclaimed multidisciplinary artist based in Dublin, Ireland, working across audiovisual performance, generative video, sound, and installation. His practice explores translation as a process, using data collected from live instruments as the basis for realtime visual compositions. Moving beyond representation, his work examines how one system of meaning can be distorted or expanded through another.

Best known for his use of modular synthesizers, drum machines, and custom visual systems, his recent project Structures (2024), funded by the Arts Council of Ireland, explores shifting relationships between sound and image through live performance. His work has been presented across Ireland, Europe, North America, and Australia, with recent performances at ADE Festival, Amsterdam, and Goldsmiths, London.
